Basic Computer Maintenance

Introduction

Taking care of your computer is very important if you want to be able to use it to its full potential. At the least, it is necessary to be aware that as computers, anything can go wrong with them at any time. That is why it is important to make regular backups of your important data (Word Documents, etc...). Even if your hardware doesn't crash, your Operating System could always get a virus without you even being aware (especially if you are running Microsoft Windows). For this reason, I strongly advise to do what you can to prevent this from happening.

Do your Windows Updates!

As a Microsoft Windows user, my first piece advice is to make sure you have all of the necessary Windows Updates. To do this, visit http://www.windowsupdate.com and run an Express scan on your computer to identify any security patches that should be downloaded. Note: Windows Updates are only available for users running Windows XP or Windows Vista.

On a side note, if you are considering buying a new computer, try to avoid getting Windows Vista. It is still too new, and in my opinion, it is a buggy, enhanced version of Windows XP. I do not have much personal experience, but I have done some troubleshooting on Vista before, and I have heard stories. AVOID WINDOWS VISTA!!
